Wildflowers – The difference between Annuals, Biennials and Perennials
There is no season of the year when the countryside is not decorated by one or another of the many attractive wildflowers which flourish in woods and hedgerows, meadows and marshland.
Annuals
Annuals will only last for one year. However, they tend to be colourful and quick growing. They shed their seeds for a new plant to grow the following year, but this will only happen if there is exposed soil for the seed to fall onto and assuming it doesn’t get smothered by surrounding plants.
(Corncockle, Corn Chamomile, Cornflower, Poppy, Yellow Rattle and Bugloss are all Annual Wildflowers)
Biennials
These plants take 2 years to complete their life cycle. They will germinate and grow and be hardy through the winter and then the following year they continue to grow and then flower and go to seed. Just like an Annual, it is possible for the seeds to grow the following year as long as there is enough space and conditions are good..
(Teasel, Vipers Bugloss, Wild Carrot and Wild Angelica are all Biennial Wildflowers)
Perennials
Perennials take longer to establish. You won’t normally see them flower in the first year but after that you will see them come back year after year.
(White Clover, Hedge Bedstraw, Common Mallow, Red & White Campions, Field Scabious and Meadow Vetchling are all Perennial Wildflowers)
