Nyjer seed (also known as niger and nyger) is rich in essential nutrients and oils and high in fat. These seeds promote a healthy balanced diet all year round. Nyjer’s high-calorie content is a great energy source for garden birds; particularly in the colder months. What is more, compared to other wild bird seed it is a superior source of fat, fibre and protein – a brilliant and delicious seed!

The release of oils in the seeds gives birds the calories they need to help them store fat in order to keep them warm and survive the colder months. Nyjer is particularly suited to small-beaked birds who are experts at eating these tiny seeds. They are experts at cracking them open with their pointed and sharp beaks. High in protein, nyger  also helps with the regeneration of feathers.

Who will it attract?

The seeds in this mix are quite small; perfect for attracting smaller birds. Though you will find it is a firm favourite for all birds big and small. Nyjer is particularly popular with members of the finch family; Goldfinches in particular love Nyjer seeds, as well as Greenfinches, Chaffinches and Bullfinches but to name a few. Treat the finches in your area to one of their favourite foods!

Top Tips

We recommend using a Nyjer seed-specific feeder to prevent excessive loss of these small seeds. This will reduce waste as these seeds flow easily; making it a cost effective straight to buy.  Though this seed is also fine to use on a feeding table or can be spread on the ground.

If you have not offered Nyjer before it may help to offer it with mixed seed to help the birds get accustomed to it.

We recommend storing your bird seed in a cool and dry location to ensure it remains fresh right up to its best before date.
